Dean's Message

Welcome to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) of the National University of Singapore!

Not only are we one of the largest Faculties in the University, FASS has a rich history (having celebrated its 80th Anniversary in 2009) as well as a strong international reputation for educational and research excellence. With 17 departments, 20 major subjects, a host of minor programmes and a Centre for Language Studies offering both Asian and European languages, we offer the most comprehensive education in the humanities, social sciences and Asian studies in this part of the world. We are well-endowed with talented professors and lecturers who are dedicated and passionate about research and teaching. Indeed, FASS has enjoyed phenomenal growth in terms of people, programmes, facilities and research in recent years and continues to be the Faculty of choice in Singapore and in the region.

We offer our students a fulfilling and stimulating educational experience with a range of programmes that are rigorous yet innovative - a comprehensive education that challenges young minds. FASS students are trained to specialise with their majors, while exposure to knowledge outside the major, such as in Business, Computing, Engineering, Law, and Science, broaden their minds. At the same time, FASS students have access to exciting international exchange programmes and summer programmes such as the prestigious Asia Now!, and have opportunities to be enriched through self-discovery and independent learning. As a result, our undergraduates are well-equipped with skills such as critical thinking, analysis, evaluation and problem-solving, and are able to move on to successful careers in many industries.

Based on rigorous disciplinary training, our graduate students engage in meaningful and original research, which often includes extensive fieldwork in Asia. The availability of attractive scholarships enables students to fully concentrate on their studies and to participate in the many events that take place in our Faculty, uniquely bringing together staff and students across nationalities and departments. Opportunities to teach, to spend time at other universities and to present and publish their research internationally prepare our graduate students well for careers in and outside of academia.

FASS' research has gone from strength to strength, and the research landscape is truly rich and diverse. Complementing discipline-based research conducted in the various departments, FASS currently has five interdisciplinary research clusters on Cities; Health; Migration; Religion; Science and Technology, which add cross-cutting synergy to the FASS research culture. We continue to make our mark internationally through our collaborations with premier universities in Asia, Australasia, Europe and North America in developing research programmes, projects, conferences and workshops. While no one intellectual project can seamlessly weave together the diverse components of FASS research, our research faculty has given focus to the globalised and interconnected flows – of knowledge, ideas, practices and technologies – between ‘East' and ‘West' as well as among intra-Asian domains of knowledge/power. Indeed, our geographical positioning in the heart of Asia has encouraged us to capitalise on the rapidly growing region as our laboratory and inspiration.

FASS enjoys and appreciates the unerring support of alumni, who contributes meaningfully every year to student programmes and other activities. Having developed crucial skills during their years with us, our alumni have been most encouraging and supportive of the many innovations in teaching, research and career-preparation programmes that we constantly strive for and achieve. Many maintain active and meaningful links with us, providing generously of their time and advice. In particular, our alumni have contributed to the ‘FASS Mentorship Programme' (career mentorship for final-year students), the ‘FASS Family Host Programme' (a befriender programme for international students), as well as given numerous careers-related talks under ‘FASSTalk: The Alumni Series'.

We are a Faculty that believes in harnessing our diversity to create a conducive environment for each one of us to develop our talents to their fullest potential. At the same time, we remain true to our mission, preserving a strong social commitment, seeking ways to contribute to society and the development of the nation. I warmly invite you to come discover for yourself the rich offerings at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Find out why we are still the “Faculty of Choice” for more than 1,500 every year!
