Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) by Research

The minimum qualifications for admission as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy are a Master’s degree and the ability to pursue independent research in the candidate’s proposed field of advanced study. The minimum period of candidature is 2 years and the maximum, 5 years. The course may be offered on a full-time or part-time basis.

Candidates are required to submit a thesis of 150,000 - 250,000 characters for examination at the end of the course. In addition, they must read and pass 6 coursework modules. These six modules must include CH6770.

The CAP should not fall below 3.00 for two consecutive semesters or 3.50 for three consecutive semesters. Part-time and full-time candidates are expected to sit for the PhD Qualifying Examination (QE) before the end of the 24th month of candidature, after completing the coursework requirement with minimum CAP of 3.5 and where applicable, obtain satisfactory grades (at least grade C) in the Centre for English Language Communication graduate English modules at intermediate level. The Qualifying Examination comprises a comprehensive examination, and an oral defence of the Ph.D thesis proposal (30-page to 50-page).
