Introduction
The Department has developed into one of the leading centres for Chinese Studies in the Southeast Asian region. It has played an important role in bridging Chinese cultural heritage and modern Singapore, promoting cutting-edge research in Chinese studies, and providing effective bilingual training to students from different cultural backgrounds.
As one of the departments in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Department of Chinese Studies has full-time teaching staff who graduated from prestigious universities in different parts of the world. In recent years, about 1000 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled each year for all levels of study in the department.
At the graduate level, the following programmes are offered:
- M.A. by Coursework
- M.A. by Research
- Double Degree M.A. by Research in Chinese Language with Peking University
- Ph.D.
The M.A. by Coursework programme is structured around course requirements with no dissertation requirement.
For the M.A. by Research and Ph.D. programmes, the degree is awarded on the basis of supervised research, modular requirements and the submission of a thesis for examination.
For the Double Degree MA programme, MA by Research students who qualifies for it may apply to enter the programme at the end of his or her first semester. Upon graduation, they will be conferred 2 degrees, one from NUS and the other from Peking University.
Applicants whose native tongue or medium of undergraduate instruction is not English should submit TOEFL – 580 for the paper-based test of 237 for the computer-based test or IELTS – 6.0 scored as evidence of their proficiency in the English language.
