Introduction

Chinese Studies and Chinese Language are offered as two separate specialisations in the B.A. programme. The B.A. Honours programme in Chinese Studies is available to students who have read either Chinese Studies or Chinese Language as a single major.

All modules listed below are taught in Chinese, except CH2291, CH2292, CH2292A, CH2293, CH3291, CH3292, CH3293, GEK1007 AND GEK1021, which are taught in English. All modules are offered as electives for students from other departments/programmes.

Not all modules are necessarily available in any given year.

  • Chinese Studies

The curriculum consists of 3 major areas i.e., Chinese literature, history and philosophy. It aims to provide students with comprehensive training in both classical and modern Chinese Studies. Topics covered include classical and modern Chinese literature, ancient and modern history of China, pre-Qin ideology and religion, business Chinese, film and cultural studies. The Department emphasises on training students to develop independent and critical thinking. Although Mandarin is the medium of instruction, some modules are conducted in English. Graduates from the Department are always highly sought after because they are effectively bilingual. Both the public and private sectors provide ample employment opportunities especially in education, mass media, commerce and the arts.

Students will be given an in-depth understanding of the Chinese language system including its characters, phonetics and grammar system as well as formation of Chinese ‘words', the origin of Chinese characters , Chinese rhetoric, Chinese discourse analysis and pragmatics etc. Graduates who major in both Chinese Language and Chinese Studies will find themselves much in demand in the field of language education.
