Urbanization in Asia Pacific has been proceeding at a phenomenal rate, with economic globalization and the tendency for foreign investments and economic activities fuelling urban growth and change, and with cities becoming the sites of the development of new industries, cultural practices and social phenomena. The Global Cities Research Cluster aims to bring together scholars from across disciplines with a common interest in urban phenomena and the city
The cluster is particularly interested in the range of experiences in and of diverse cities in the Asia Pacific region as they are impacted by in an era of globalization and associated transborder flows and connections of various kinds. To this the cluster brings a range of perspectives brought to bear on each topic by experts from the different domains of humanities and social sciences academia.
Approaching the city either as a unit of analysis in its own right or as a site for investigating particular issues, the Cluster seeks to produce new knowledge and analyses of focal cities in the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, the 'global' framing of the cluster means that even the seemingly most 'local'of urban study may be understood in terms of,and can speak to,wider processes (socio-cultural and political as well as economic)-the flows, influences, competitions, conflicts, movements, participations and other phenomena which characterise cities in an age of globalization.
