About the event:
The event is centered around discussion of a working paper written by A/P Michael Leaf (UBC). The author will briefly describe the background to the paper before opening out for discussion. The paper reviews international population movements within the Asian region and considers current factors and conditions that shape policies toward international migration. This includes consideration of the roles and functions of the region’s urbanization in shaping flows and patterns of migration.
The aim is to extend beyond the specifics of the presented paper (which will be circulated in advance) to open up discussion on the roles of, and possible implications for, Asian cities in shaping international migration and fostering social inclusion of migrants.About the Speaker:
A/P Michael Leaf has been extensively involved in urbanization research and capacity building projects in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, China and Sri Lanka. The courses he teaches at School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP) cover the theory and practices of development planning and the social, institutional and environmental aspects of urbanization in developing countries.
