.: Career Prospects
The CNM Programme will prepare students for work in the various aspects of Communications and New Media which play a critical part in many commercial, industrial and other professional environments of today.
An increasing requirement of the organisational environment is not only understanding of the technical aspects of informational technology (the “hard skills”). As importantly, there is a need for a creative sensibility which would lead to innovative use and management of information, and a critical awareness of the impact of the information infrastructure at the human, organisational and societal levels (“soft skills”).
Graduates from the CNM Programme will be very attractive to employers because they will have a solid understanding of the new media industry locally, regionally and globally. In general terms, graduates will be able to manage information and be capable of entering and adapting quickly to different situations (and organizations) in which information is critical to success. In practical terms, this programme teaches students how to search for, assemble and disseminate information. The programme also educates students on the consequences of the information society.
Students who specialise in interactive media will be able to work in corporate communications, government agencies dealing with media development, media and design firms, research institutes specialising in interactive media content, public relations firms, advertising agencies and a wide range of commercial, industrial and professional environments. In addition, graduates in interactive media would be able to venture into their own businesses.
The communication management area will prepare students to work in traditional media as well as in new media, IT companies or other ICT-related companies. Graduates will be able to work in corporations, government agencies, public relations firms and not-for-profit organisations, all of whom need effective and strategic management of communications to be successful.
Other sectors where CNM graduates have successfully secured jobs are tourism, banking and multinational corporations. In government agencies, graduates can work in policy analysis or facilitate communication between government officials and the private sector or supervise communication networks and interactive services.
