This was a commentary article by Associate Professor Lim Sun Sun, Deputy Head at the Department of Communications and New Media at NUS. Assoc Prof Lim noted that in the current era of digital connection,, sharing a personal observtion no longer suffice, as people increasingly find the need to ater to the multiple publics and strive to present titillating facets of themselves that were previous inaccessible to their online audience. Citing the Amy Cheong saga as an example, she reminded the readers that online spaces remain part of a larger social fabric that rests on norms, values and standards of human decency and that there is a need to blend an appreciation of the public nature of Internet with some old-fashioned self-consciousness.
