The Faculty allows students to take their Qualifying Examination (QE) no later than the 24th month from the start of the PhD candidature. If the PhD candidate fails on the first attempt, a second attempt may be taken no later than six months after the first attempt, thus giving students until the end of the 30th month of their candidature to pass their QE.
The thesis committee comprises the supervisor and two other faculty members, both of whom can be from any department within NUS (including CNM).
CNM’s QE requirements are that candidates have two written examinations and one oral examination.
(i) The written examination will consist of two papers: theory and methodology, and a
paper in the area of specialization related to the dissertation. Each paper will be of a
four-hour duration.
(ii) The exam will be closed-book. CNM will provide office space and a computer so the
student can write the papers.
(iii) The student must prepare a reading list for the two papers, which must be approved
by his/her committee. The questions for the paper must be based on that reading
list.
(iv) The student will have one week (Monday through Friday) to complete the written
examination portion. Students can choose when to take the exam within that week (i.e. one paper every other day;
two papers in one day etc.). The Student should submit to the Department a preferred time schedule at
least 15 days
before the examination week.
The oral examination will cover issues that were not clearly articulated in the written examination. It will take place no later than four weeks after the written examination is completed. The committee members will inform the student of the issues which the student will have to address during the oral examination so the student can prepare adequately.
