Ranked among the best Communication and Media Studies Departments globally, the Department of Communications & New Media (CNM) at the National University of Singapore is the only degree programme in Southeast Asia that offers media studies, interactive media design and communication management with a focus on new media.
The Department integrates the social sciences, humanities, arts, computing, design and engineering to create a space for teaching, researching and practicing communication in new and emergent media contexts. The multi-disciplinary focus of scholarship at CNM is our hallmark, and we take a leadership role in informing the practice of new media communication through the amalgamation of multiple paradigms.
Our researchers are globally ranked, established as some of the leaders in communication and in the emergent area of new media, theorizing about and empirically investigating the effects of mobile media, human understanding and uses of new technologies, critical implications of new media, cognitive processing of human computer interfaces, design of multimedia solutions, development of strategic communication campaigns, emergence of leadership in new media contexts, culturally-rooted understandings of health meanings, sharing of knowledge in open source spaces, contradictions in online activism, and implications for new media policy among many others. Publishing their work in leading communication and new media outlets, our faculty lead in shaping contemporary theorizing of new media and communication processes. Much of the work that is done at CNM is committed to having a social impact through the development of policies, design, and communication solutions.
Securing high reputation ranking from the industry, CNM innovates in integrating theory with practice, fosters an interdisciplinary education that integrates social science, humanities, arts and computing, and nurtures creativity and innovation through hands-on projects. Theory lies at the heart of the intellectual endeavour at CNM, connecting interpretive frames, conceptual maps, and critical insights to the practice of new media.
CNM is uniquely positioned to prepare students for today’s converging media environment, where communication professionals are expected to have a broad range of knowledge and creative skills, from critical thinking and excellent writing to the ability to create interactive media, art installations, and strategic communication campaigns. Students benefit from an understanding of emerging trends in the evolving communication industry, connecting classroom learning with global industry immersion. Our students emerge as leaders in the public policy, communication management, interactive design, non-profit and new media sectors. In addition, a number of CNM alums are actively engaged in socially engaged spaces, offering leadership through politics, social entrepreneurship and community service.
CNM’s multi-disciplinary approach offers students opportunities in experiential learning through service learning projects for globally-distributed clients and community organizations, global and local internships, international and local competitions, exhibitions, exchanges with leading global universities, opportunities to participate in collaborative research projects on social problems, and interactions with industry professionals through talks, site visits, and joint industry projects. CNM is home to award-winning faculty members who hail from top universities around the world such as Cambridge, Harvard, MIT, Cornell, Purdue, Michigan State University and University of Minnesota, bringing with them innovative teaching methods and excellence in communication research.
