Graduation Requirements

Single Major [B.A]

 Cohort 2016 onwards

 To major in NM, students need to: 

1.       Pass NM1101E or NM1101X. This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE requirements. 

2.       Pass at least 44 MCs of NM modules or NM-recognised modules which includes the following: 

a.       NM2101 

b.      NM2103 

c.       NM2104 

d.      NM3550Y (see Note 1) 

e.      A minimum of 20 MCs from level-3000 modules or higher. 

f.        A maximum of 2 level-4000 NM modules. 

g.       A maximum of 8 MCs NM-recognised modules. 

Note: 

1.       Students may read TR3202 (12 MCs) in place of NM3550Y. 

2.       Level-5000 or NM modules are not allowed.

Cohort 2012 onwards 

Pass at least 60 MCs, which include the following: 

  1. Read and pass the following modules:

    1. NM1101E or NM1101X
    2. NM2101
    3. NM2103
    4. NM2104
  2. A minimum of 20 MCs from level-3000 modules or higher.
  3. A maximum of 2 level-4000 NM modules.
  4. Students may read a maximum of 16 MCs of NN-recognised modules. 

Note:

 1. Level-5000 or higher NM modules are not allowed.

 

Before cohort 2012

Pass at least 60 MCs, which include the following:

  1. Read and pass the following modules:

    1. NM1101E
    2. NM2101
    3. NM2102

    Note: Cohort 2011 and before students who have not taken NM2102 are required to take one of the following

    1. NM2103
    2. NM2104

    Students who have read NM2102 may read NM2103 and/or NM2104 as electives so long as graduation requirements are met.

  2. A minimum of 20 MCs from level-3000 modules or higher.
  3. A maximum of 2 level-4000 NM modules.
  4. Students may read a maximum of 16 MCs of recognised modules or approved School of Computing modules.

Note:

  1. Level-5000 or higher NM modules are not allowed.

Single Major [B.Soc. Sci (Hons)]

 

Cohort 2016 onwards

 To major in NM, students need to:   

  1.   Pass NM1101E or NM1101X. This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE
  2.   Pass at least 84 MCs of NM or NM-recognisedmodules, which include the following: 
    1.   NM3550Y (see Note
    2. A minimum of 60 MCs of level-3000 NM or NM-recognised modules or higher,
    3.  A maximum of 2 level-5000 NM modules (subject to department’s approval). 
    4.  A maximum of 12 MCs of NM-recognised 

Note: 

         1.      Students may read TR3202 (12 MCs) in place of NM350Y.   

 

Cohort 2012 onwards  

Pass at least 100 MCs, which include the following:

 1.     Read and pass the following modules:

         a.     NM1101E or NM1101X

          b.     NM2101

         c.     NM2103

          d.     NM2104

          e.     NM4102

 2.     A minimum of 60 MCs of level-3000 modules or higher NM or NM-recognised modules, of which

       a.a minimum of 40 MCs from level-4000 or higher (including NM4102).

 3.     A maximum of 2 level-5000 NM modules. (Subject to department's approval) (IMPORTANT: see note 5)

 4.     Students may read a maximum of 20 MCs of NM-recognised modules.

 

Before cohort 2012 

Pass at least 100 MCs, which include the following:

 1.     Read and pass the following modules:

         a.     NM1101E

         b.     NM2101

        c.     NM2102       

        Note: 

        Cohort 2011 and before students who have not taken NM2102 are required to take one of the following 

  1. NM2103 
  1. NM2104 

        Students who have read NM2102 may read NM2103 and/or NM2104 as electives so long as graduation requirements are met. 

 2.     NM4101 or NM4102

3. A minimum of 60 MCs of level-3000 modules or higher NM or NM-recognised modules, of which

      a. a minimum of 40 MCs from level-4000 or higher (including NM4102).

 4.  A maximum of 2 level-5000 NM modules. (Subject to department's approval) (IMPORTANT: see note 5)

 5. Students may read a maximum of 20 MCs of recognised modules oapproved School of Computing modules. 

Note:

  1.   To declare an Honours track, students must have completed 110 MCs, including 60 MCs in the Major, with a CAP of 3.5 and above.
  2.    To qualify for Honours Thesis/Project (15 MCs), students must be on the Honours track and must pass NM4101 or NM4102 and complete 110 MCs including 60 MCs of NM major requirements a minimum SJAP of 4.0 and CAP of 3.5. In order to obtain First Class Honours, students must achieve a CAP of 4.5 or higher and at least an 'A-' in the Honours Thesis/Project.
  3.  Students may also read a level-4000 Independent Studies Module (5 MCs). The level- 4000 ISM carries a prerequisite of 100 MCs completed, including 60 MCs in the Major, with a minimum CAP of 3.5. It precludes the Honours Thesis/Project.
  4.   All level-4000 modules carry a general pre-requisite of having completed 80 MCs, including 28 MCs in the Major, with a minimum CAP of 3.5 or being on the Honours track. (Some level-4000 modules may have additional pre-requisites).
  5.   Students who do not attempt the Honours Thesis/Project will read Level-4000 modules to fulfil the Honours Requirements. 

 

Second Major in CNM

 Cohort 2016 onwards

To major in NM, students need to:   

  1.   Pass NM1101E or NM1101X. This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE
  2.  Pass at least 44 MCs of NM modules or NM-recognised modules which includes the following: 
    1. NM3550Y (see notes 1 and
    2.   A minimum of 20 MCs from level-3000 modules or
    3.  A maximum of 2 level-4000 NM
    4.  A maximum of 8 MCs NM-recognised 

Note: 

        1.  NM3550Y is only compulsory for FASS students. Non-FASS students must read other level-3000 or higher NM or NM-recognised modules in lieu of NM3550Y.  

          2. FASS students may read TR3202 (12 MCs) in place of NM3550Y

         3.  Level-5000 or NM modules are not allowed.

 

Cohort 2012 onwards

d.     NM2216 User Centred Design Methodologies 

e.     NM2219 Principles of Communication Management 

f.      NM3202 Governance and New Media 

g.     NM3204 E-learning 

h.     NM3210 Cybercrime and Society 

i.      NM3215 Advertising Strategies 

j.      NM3227 Critical Game Design 

k.     NM3880 Topics in Communications and New Media

  • Please note that the minor in CNM comprises of the modules listed above. All other modules not listed above are NOT counted towards the minor.
  • A maximum of 8 MCs from the minor can be used to satisfy the requirements of a major or another minor. However, the credits for these modules will be counted ONCE. FASS students will still need to fulfill the MCs required for the UE outside major requirements.
