Ms Chung Lyn-Yi of the ICM Honours Class of 2004 has made department
history by becoming our first ever undergraduate to present a paper
at an international academic conference. Lyn-Yi flew the ICM flag
at "The Global
and the Local in Mobile Communication" conference, held in Budapest,
Hungary from 10-12 June 2004. Organised by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
and Hungary 's leading telco Westel, it attracted more than 100 participants
from leading universities and research institutions worldwide. Lyn-Yi was the
youngest speaker at the conference which featured eminent scholars studying
social and technological trends in mobile communication.
When Lyn-Yi's thesis supervisor, Dr Lim Sun Sun, learnt of the conference,
she felt that it would be an excellent forum for airing Lyn-Yi's research and
encouraged her to submit a paper. Their co-written piece, "From Monochonic to
Mobilechronic - Temporality in the Era of Mobile Communication" discussed how
uses and perceptions of time in Singapore have been influenced by growing mobile
communications use. Their paper was selected from amongst many submissions and
met with a positive response at the conference. Participants were keen on
understanding the Asian perspective in mobile communications and were particularly
interested in Lyn-Yi's novel research methodology. Click here for the Abstract of the paper.
Congratulations to Lyn-Yi on a successful conference presentation!
