Thesis Title:
The use of ICTs in long distance family communication: A Singaporean perspective

Abstract:
The realities of a globalised economy have led to an increase in the number of individuals working outside their country of residence. In order to maintain relational ties and to keep up with important family matters, communication is a necessity. While these needs have been served by the use of media such as the conventional telephone and letters, the landscape looks set to change. ICTs provide a substantial advantage in the conduct of business and family communication in a long distance setting. This paper attempts to understand the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in Singaporean families which engage in long distance communication through in-depth ethnographic interviews with families. Theoretical principles of the strategic and motivated user, expected and emergent effects (SMEE) framework will be utilized to understand how these technologies aid or impede communication within these families and their resulting effect on the relationships amongst the family members.
