MAO Chengting

I graduated from Wuhan University, China, with a BA and a MA in English Literature and Language before I came to this beautiful country and joined CNM in August, 2008. My research for MA used to be translation theory and its application, quite related to communication, so here I am in hope of furthering my study in this area. Currently, my research interest is film and TV media, especially from the perspective of postmodernism.

Proposed Thesis Title:
Female Representation as Super-heroines in American Fantasy Films

Proposed Abstract:
Female characters in films used to be either the innocent beauty waiting to be saved or seductive witch-like women. However, these stereotypes are gradually changing with the development of feminism. An interesting trend in recent films, especially fantasy, action-involved movies, is that women are becoming much stronger, both physically and intellectually either as protagonists or supporting roles, such as Tomb Raider and Underworld, where women characters, instead of men, are the tough ones having superb ability to fight against monsters, to save people, and to undergo highly risky adventures. And more importantly, there is a lot of research done dealing with this subject. However, these studies mainly focus on TV series rather than films, and they were mostly produced before the 21th century. Little research has delved into the relevant films made in this millennium, and also fails to take into consideration how the new development of movie-making technology will impact these films. Therefore, my future research will be conducted to explore these questions.

Research Interests:
• Film consumption
• Postmodernism and postfeminism
