Dr Chou Kai Ren was an Economics lecturer during the early 1960s at NUS’ predecessor institution, the University of Malaya, and he later served as Professor and Head of the Department of Economics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and at Nanyang University. The family of Professor Chou has pledged an endowed gift to set up the K. R. Chou PhD Scholarship in Economics to support the most promising students during their first year of study at the Department of Economics at NUS. The Scholarship will be awarded concurrently with a University Research Scholarship, enabling support for the recipients’ entire duration of study of up to 5 years. The award of this scholarship will commence in AY2014, subject to availability of funding.

Application Period

The Department offers a Semester I (August) intake. Applications will open from 16 May to 1 November (in the year preceding the intake).

Value of Scholarship

One scholarship of S$40,000 will be awarded concurrently with a University Research Scholarship (RS) to the most promising PhD students at admission annually. The award will support the recipient in their first year of study, whilst the RS will provide support for a maximum of the next four years, thus bringing the total support to five years. The RS will be disbursed to the recipient in the second year onwards and up to the fifth year, provided they have achieved satisfactory progress in the course of studies.

The KR Chou Scholarship will be disbursed at the first year of candidature. It will pay for tuition fees for the first year, and the balance will be disbursed in two equal lump sums in August and January of that academic year.

The scholarship is awarded on the basis of competition among eligible candidates. Recipients will be selected from among the best in each cohort.
NUS reserves the right not to award any scholarship if there are no candidates of sufficient merit. The decision of the selection committee is final. Enquiries or disputes surrounding its decisions will not be entertained.

Selection Process

Eligible and outstanding applicants to NUS will automatically be considered for the KR Chou PhD Scholarship in Economics based on their applications for admission to NUS. There is no need to submit a separate application for the scholarship. Successful applicant will be notified upon admission and after completing registration formalities.
