Dr Chou Kai Ren was an Economics lecturer during the early 1960s at NUS’ predecessor institution, the University of Malaya, and he later served as Professor and Head of the Department of Economics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and at Nanyang University. The family of Professor Chou has pledged an endowed gift to set up the K. R. Chou PhD Scholarship in Economics to support the most promising students during their fifth year of study at the Department of Economics at NUS.

The award recipient will be given a full Tuition Fee Allowance in his/her fifth year of candidature as well as a monthly stipend of S$2,000. The scholarship will cease once the student submits his/her PhD thesis for examination or convert to part-time student status.

Applicants are required to submit the following:

1. Recommendation letter from supervisor;

2. Research work, including at least one completed thesis chapter;

3. Present a chapter from their thesis in a Graduate Research Seminar, Department Seminar or Reading Group during their fourth year of studies. At least one member of the SSC must attend their presentation.

The scholarship is awarded on the basis of competition among eligible candidates. Recipients will be selected from among the best in each cohort.

NUS reserves the right not to award any scholarship if there are no candidates of sufficient merit. The decision of the selection committee is final. Enquiries or disputes surrounding its decisions will not be entertained.
