Introduction

The Department of Economics is a department in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The Department conducts courses leading to the degrees of B.A. and B.Soc.Sci. (Hons) in Economics. Postgraduate programmes are also available for Master of Social Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. In addition, selected courses are provided to students of other Departments and Faculties of the University including the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Law.

The discipline of Economics is the key to an understanding and analysis of economies and their constituent components. In recent decades, this role has been strengthened by the infusion of mathematical, statistical and computational methods in the subject matter of Economics. Rigour of analysis, empirical validation of economic hypotheses and contributions to business and public policy have been the main pillars on which the discipline's reputation has been built.

B.A. and B.Soc.Sci. (Hons) Degrees

1.     Students who wish to major in Economics must matriculate in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Economics is a major programme within the Bachelor of Social Sciences curriculum.

2.     The Economics major programme is open to all matriculated students of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences regardless of their pre-university background.
