The Department of English Language and Literature is proud to establish the Maurice Baker Fund to honour the long and distinguished career of Dr Maurice Baker.
Dr Baker was the first Singaporean to become Head of our Department, leading it with distinction from 1972 to 1977 before becoming a career diplomat.
On his 84th birthday in March 2004, a Fund in his name was established to found and support a scholarship or medal for academic excellence. The fund both honours Dr Baker's own significant contributions and sustains the heritage that has been part of the Department's legacy as one of the oldest in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. We hope the Maurice Baker Fund will play an important role in helping us cultivate the value of a humanistic education.
We hope that you will share our enthusiasm by contributing generously to the Maurice Baker Fund. No contribution is too small, and would certainly go a long way towards helping a worthy scholar through study in the Department.
