| The
Department of English Language and Literature has a long
and distinguished history. It started in 1929 as one of
the founder departments of Raffles College. After a period
as part of the University of Malaya, and then the University
of Singapore, the Department, with the rest of the University
of Singapore, later combined with other institutions to
form what is the National University of Singapore today.
The
spread and quality of spoken and written English in
Singapore represent one of the country's key assets.
We help
maintain and develop that advantage.
We are the leading centre for English Studies
in the region. Our staff come from all corners of the
globe and have earned degrees from universities as varied
as NUS, Cambridge, Harvard and Chicago.
Because
we are one of the largest in the Faculty, we
can offer an unusually wide choice of modules for students majoring in three
areas of study, English Language, English Literature
and Theatre Studies. Language modules deal with such matters as the structure
of language, English in Singapore and the meaning of
different kinds of text. Literature modules are equally
diverse, covering everything from Chaucer to literary
theory, film studies, and the new literatures in English.
Theatre Studies approaches the practical and theoretical
aspects of theatre, in both Eastern and Western traditions.
Our programmes are supported by research. All
our faculty are scholars, actively engaged in the discovery
of knowledge. Their works appear in learned journals
throughout the world, as well as in books produced by
leading academic publishers. |
