About Us
[The Environment Cluster in the National University of Singapore (NUS), Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), is an initiative to foster interdisciplinary approaches in environment-related research. The Environment Cluster seeks to catalyze broader collaborative research efforts within the FASS, among different faculties in the NUS and with other international universities and research institutions.
Environmental issues are not only scientific and engineering problems but are also social, economic, cultural and political problems. For this reason, FASS has an important role in the field of environmental research. Environmental problems are generally complex, marked by effects that are economic, social, political and potentially even security-related, as well as the direct effects on the physical environment. . At the same time, political, social, economic and cultural factors drive many of the processes that create environmental problems. Recognizing such complexities, the FASS Environment Cluster seeks to bring together members from different disciplines to engage in meaningful and substantive research within the environmental field.
In order to facilitate such research, the Environment Cluster works to promote and organize the research capacity of the FASS. At the same time, the Environment Cluster also acts as the entry point for various other faculties and institutes for collaborative research efforts. The Environment Cluster is currently interested in 5 main research themes: (1) Carbon Budgeting; (2) Food and Natural Resource Sustainability; (3) Social Consequences of Environmental Changes and Natural Hazards; (4) Climate Change; (5) Upland Ecosystems and Metropolitan Relationships. The Environment Cluster welcomes anyone whose research interests fall in these areas but is also open to any other research interests related to the environment.
