Assoc Prof David Higgitt was interviewed for a feature in The Straits Times on 12 October 2006 concerning the difficulty of predicting wind patterns for haze forecasting. As the haze problem continued he provided comments on available technology for cloud seeding in The Straits Times on 17 November 2006.

Prof Brenda Yeoh was featured in The Singapore Women’s Weekly, November 2006 for “The Singapore Women’s Weekly Great Women of Our Time Awards”.

Assoc Prof Matthias Roth was interviewed on his views about climate change and impact on Singapore by the Singapore Environment Council. It was featured on their newsletter, Element, December 2006.

Prof Brenda Yeoh was featured on The Straits Times, 12 January 2007 on “Helping foreigners fit in: ‘Don’t just focus on talents”.

The unusual weather over the New Year period generated much media interest in global warming and the likely impacts of a developing El Nino. Assoc Prof David Higgitt made some comments about the combined effects of global warming and El Nino in The Straits Times on 10 January 2007. This was rapidly followed by a live TV interview on Channel News Asia (Prime Time Morning) on 11 January 2007 analysing unusual weather patterns around the world. Assoc Prof David Higgitt’s views were also sought regarding the January flash floods in Singapore and the difficulty of providing precise weather forecasts (Straits Times, 13 January 2007). David made some comments about new research identifying long term variability in the strength of the Asian Monsoon, reported in The Straits Times on 20 January 2007. Further comments on climatic variability, wet monsoons and global warming appeared on the front page of Today on 22 January 2007.

Just ahead of the IPCC report being released, Assoc Prof David Higgitt was interviewed about climate change for a documentary on Channel News Asia (Insight) aired on 31 January 2007. Two further comments on aspects of climate change appeared in The Straits Times in February 2007.

In Okinawa, Assoc Prof Wong Poh Poh was interviewed by The Ryukyu Shimpo, 7 February 2007, on the prospects of tourism development for Jeju.

Assoc Prof David Higgitt was called into action on 6 March 2007 to comment on the earthquake centered on Padang, Sumatra, which caused several buildings in Singapore to be evacuated. First, he contributed some comments in a telephone interview on Channel News Asia (Asia Today). This was followed by a live studio interview (Southeast Asia Tonight) and two recorded interviews for Prime Time News and Singapore Tonight. Extracts from these recording were used on Prime Time Morning on 7 March 2007. An interview about earthquake hazard was broadcast on Radio Singapore International (Singapore Scene) on 15 March 2007. Comments on earthquakes also featured in Berita Harian on 17 March 2007. An interview about earthquake hazard in Singapore, conducted before the March event was a feature article in the April 2007 edition of Southern Cross (magazine of the Japanese Association of Singapore).

Prof Henry Yeung was interviewed by Louise Lucas, Financial Times correspondent in Tokyo, for his comment on Asian family business. His view was published in “A new generation of family firm”, Financial Times, London, 10 March 2007.

Within a few hours of reports of a powerful earthquake in the Solomon Islands, Assoc Prof David Higgitt was interviewed live by phone concerning tsunami generation on Channel News Asia on 2 April 2007. A live phone interview was also conducted on Channel News Asia on 19 May 2007 to explain the causes of tidal waves affecting many areas around the Indian Ocean. When a water spout was observed off the coast of Singapore, David was called upon to explain the phenomena in a recorded phone interview for Channel News Asia (Prime Time News) on 25 May 2007. Some comments on the causes of the large waves impacting the region featured in The Straits Times article on 28 May 2007.

Prof Lily Kong was featured in a CNA programme over several days in May 2007 sharing insights into Chinese wedding, birth and death rituals. She has commented on educational issues in Singapore in a number of The Straits Times, Today, and Lianhe Zaobao articles, and on Radio 93.8 and CNA, Channel 5 and 8 news throughout the year.

Assoc Prof Wong Poh Poh was interviewed by The Straits Times, 4 May 2007, where he related his experiences and the process of the plenary session of the IPCC Working Group 2 in Brussels

Assoc Prof T.C. Chang spoke on tourism development and its landscape effects in Singapore on FM93.8 on 1 June 2007. His views on mega-events as tourist attractions such as the proposed Formula 1 race in Singapore was also noted in The Straits Times, 14 March 2007.

Assoc Prof Wong Poh Poh explained the coastal processes in relation to a drowning case at Pasir Ris coast, The Straits Times, 16 April 2007.

Assoc Prof Wong Poh Poh’s work on the extreme high tide event in 1974 was used extensively in The Straits Times, 24 June 2007 on the vulnerability of Singapore to a sea-level rise.

Prof Henry Yeung was a special guest commentator in PrimeTime News LIVE on Channel NewsAsia, Special Edition on “Hong Kong: 10 Years On”, Presenters: Glenda Chong & David Nye, Singapore, 8:30-10 pm, 1 July 2007. During the show, he interacted with and commented on reports by CNA’s correspondents in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei, and Vancouver.

Assoc Prof David Higgitt was interviewed about the cause of ground subsidence for an episode of Channel News Asia series “Saving Gaia”, first broadcast on 21 July 2007. A feature interview about climate change in Singapore appeared in Lianhe Zaobao on 23 July 2007.
