About the Unit
The GIS & Map Resource Unit was established by consolidating the three units available in the Department: the GIS Lab, the Map Resource Center and the Cartographic Unit. The Unit aims to collect and provide maps of Singapore and the Southeast Asia, promote GIS education and co-ordinate multidisciplinary GIS-related research in NUS. The long-term goal is to develop the Unit into a GIS hub for the region.
Functions of the Unit
- Promote and coordinate multidisciplinary research on GIS applications
- Conduct GIS training
- Support GIS curriculum development.
- Develop digital maps and GIS database for the region of Southeast Asia.
- Provide GIS technical support
- Encourage GIS and map business activities
Facilities & Services
- Hardcopy & digital topographic maps of Singapore and SE Asia
- State-of-the-art GIS software and hardware
- GPS (both differential and handheld)
- GIS training and workshop
- GIS technical support
Research Activities
Research activities for each associate cover a wide range of issues. The details can be found in their associated departments or centers. Within the Department of Geography there are currently a variety of projects employing GIS and remote sensing techniques.
- Modeling water, sediment and carbon fluxes in the Southeast Asia (funded by Southeast Asia Regional Center for START)
- Comparison of changes in forest composition resulting from 200 years of human activity vs a 2XCO2 climate change scenario (funded by NUS)
- Land cover/land use change, soil erosion and environmental security of the international rivers in S.W. China (funded by China National ‘973’ Project)
- Geopolitics and hydro-ecology of the trans-boundary Mekong River (funded by NUS)
- Remote sensing of suspended sediment concentration of the large Asian rivers (funded by NUS)
