Department of Geography - Programmes

Undergraduate Modules

In the academic year 1994/95, the modular system was implemented in the Department along with all other departments within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS).

With semester examinations and continuous assessment, the modular system enables students to have greater control over their pace of study.

The system also provides a more accurate measure of student progress and performance. Individual module letter grades as well as a Cumulative Average Point (CAP) are recorded in students’ transcripts.

Students are also able to study at an overseas university for one semester, and outstanding students have the opportunity to complete their degrees in a shorter time.

In recent years, the University revamped the degree structure, allowing students a higher degree of flexibility and breadth in their choice of modules.
The FASS is now organised into 3 divisions – Asian Studies Division, Humanities Division and Social Sciences Division.

The Department falls under the Social Sciences Division. The Department offers over 60 modules (levels 1000 to 4000) in its curriculum which can be accessed by students within the Faculty and across faculties, just as our students can access modules from departments within the Faculty and from other faculties.

Degree Structure (Applies to 2002 cohort and after)

FASS students will select modules from levels 1000 to 4000. Modules generally involve two hours a week of lectures, and one hour a week of tutorials (or two hours of tutorials per fortnight).

Students are advised to check their graduation requirements on the Faculty website or consult their respective year co-ordinators in the Department for information.
