LBKM-THK Social Service Bursary Award


Lembaga Biasiswa Kenangan Maulud (LBKM) and Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society (THK) are charitable organizations established in 1965 and 1978 respectively. Over the years, they have been providing financial assistance to needy students. Recently, the two organizations have come together to establish the LBKM-THK Social Service Bursary Award. The purpose of this Bursary is to attract and retain graduates in the Social Service area.

 

The award of this bursary will commence in AY2008-09.

 

Application period

The bursary is open for application in Monday Week 2 of Semester 1.

 

Value of Award

The Bursary is valued up to a maximum of $3000 per applicant.

 

Disbursement

The Bursary will be given to the student within a month from approval.

 

Eligibility

Year 3 students 

  • Only Singapore citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents will be eligible for the Bursary.
  • Majoring in Psychology, Social Work or Sociology.
  • Year 3 students who are not majoring in Psychology, Social Work or Sociology but are actively involved in social service activities may apply.
  • CAP of at least 3.5.
  • Financial need (based on indicators such as family per capita income indicator) will be the deciding factor for breaking ties.
  • The Bursary holder must not hold any other awards such as scholarships, grants, bursaries or free aid, without the prior approval of the Selection Committee as well as the respective awarding bodies.

Honours Students

  • Only Singapore citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents will be eligible for the Bursary.
  • Majoring in Psychology, Social Work or Sociology
  • Honours students who are not majoring in Psychology, Social Work or Sociology but are actively involved in social service activities may apply.
  • Preferably be working on a Honours thesis or independent studies module that is related to Social Services.
  • CAP of at least 3.5 at the end of third year (or 6th semester) and completed at least 112MC
  • Financial need (based on indicators such as family per capita income indicator) will be the deciding factor for breaking ties.
  • The Bursary holder must not hold any other awards such as scholarships, grants, bursaries or free aid, without the prior approval of the Selection Committee as well as the respective awarding bodies.

Graduate Students

  • Only Singapore citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents will be eligible for the Bursary.
  • Full time Masters research / coursework in Psychology, Social Work or Sociology.
  • Full time Masters research/coursework students who are not from Psychology, Social Work or Sociology department, but are actively involved in social services may apply as well.
  • Preferably be writing a thesis in Social Services
  • Have obtained a CAP of at least 3.00 for coursework (for both coursework and research students). For students in the Masters research programme who have completed the coursework component and proceeded to the research component, they must have obtained a semestral progress report assessed as "satisfactory" and above for the relevant semesters. Other Masters research applicants who have not completed at least a semester of studies may also apply.
  • Financial need (based on indicators such as family per capita income indicator) will be the deciding factor for breaking ties.
  • The Bursary holder must not hold any other awards such as scholarships, grants, bursaries or free aid, without the prior approval of the Selection Committee as well as the respective awarding bodies.

 

 

Application Process

For applicants who are embarking on a thesis, please remember to attach a 100-word synopsis of your thesis to the application form and indicate the name of your thesis supervisor in it. The synopsis should be written in a manner that is accessible to the lay-person. (ie. Please avoid academic jargon and overly theoretical and technical writing) Successful applicant’s synopsis may be published in LBKM/THK newsletter.

Applicants who are actively involved in social services should attach supporting documents to showcase their level of involvement in the social service. (Eg. Certificate of Participation/ testimonials/ letters from organizations etc)
The completed form, together with a photo of yourself and supporting documents, must be submitted personally to the Dean’s Office at AS7 level 5, within the application period.

Successful applicants will be notified by email.

 

Upon Successful Application

Submit the Acceptance Form.

 

Students who had applied for Financial Aid via Office of Financial Aid may also be automatically considered for this bursary. Students who apply for this bursary will be considered for all other bursaries available at FASS during the same semester.
