Collaborative Exchange PhD in Pathways to
Cosmopolitanism

 

Background

 

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), National University of Singapore (NUS) invites applications for admission to a full-time PhD programme linking FASS, NUS, with the University of Manchester. This collaborative exchange PhD offers students the unique opportunity to benefit from the physical and human resources of the two universities, as well as to pursue research into cosmpolitanism at two world cities, each with its different cosmopolitan culture.

 

At least one research scholarship is available to support students enrolled in this programme. The PhD will be awarded by NUS.

 

Students may apply to any one department/programme in FASS (where supervision is available) and pursue research on a topic related to the Pathways to Cosmopolitanism (see here). Students accepted into the PhD programme may choose to be co-supervised by an appropriate academic staff member of the University of Manchester's Research Institute for Cosmopolitan Cultures (RICC), the Manchester Architecture Research centre (MARC), and/or the Centre for Chinese Studies (CCS). Eligibility

 

Prospective students must be university graduates with at least a good Masters degree in a field relevant to the department/programme to which they seek admission. There is no restriction on the nationality of applicants. This scheme is also available to full-time students already registered, or with a guaranteed place, in an FASS PhD programme.

 

Students may spend up to a year of their research period under the supervision of a faculty member of the University of Manchester who is affiliated to research on Pathways to Cosmopolitanism.

 

 

How to apply

 

New applicants can indicate their interest in this programme by writing ‘Pathways to Cosmopolitanism' at the top right hand corner of the hardcopy application form. Candidates applying online should do likewise after printing out the completed application form for submission. The application materials can be downloaded here.

 

The deadline for applications for the August 2010 intake is 15 November 2009. Current students should contact our administrator with your proposal endorsed by your department, which should include the following information:

• Current status (coursework, QE, etc.);

• Supervisor and thesis committee (if known);

• Current research project and its connection to the Pathways to Cosmopolitanism research programme; and

• A statement of interest not exceeding 300 words about the value and relevance of the collaborative exchange to your research, and your proposed co-supervisor at the University of Manchester.
