Welcome
to the Department of History, National University of Singapore.
We are one of the oldest and yet most vibrant
departments in the National University of Singapore. From
its genesis as Raffles College from 1929 and after a series
of transformations through various subsequent university
mergers, the Department has continued to grow in strength.
Today, we maintain a worldwide reputation for teaching
and research excellence and impressive track record of
producing successful graduates who can make their mark
in the professional world.
The faculty comprises 28 specialists, and
in each year approximately 5,000 undergraduates enroll
in a slate of about 50 modules. The Department's teaching
and research expertise lies primarily in the history of
Southeast and East Asia, but there is strong selection
of module offerings in European, American, and military
history, as well as the history of art, business, religion,
science and technology.
Our faculty members are committed to teaching
the content of history as well as the crucial research
skills in critical reading, thinking, writing and oral
communication. They are very approachable, and are dedicated
to teaching history, and its importance in this contemporary
era of globalization, to the university community and
to the general public. They are also actively engaged
in research and publication. They also contribute towards
the editorial work of the Journal of Southeast Asian Studies,
published by Cambridge University Press, which has acquired
an international reputation as one of the principal outlets
in the world for scholarly articles in the humanities
and social sciences dealing with Southeast Asia. One measure
of the Department's strengths is that in recent years
four of our graduates have obtained full scholarships
from Ivy League universities - Harvard, Yale, Cornell,
and the University of Pennsylvania - to pursue PhDs.
The department offers training at undergraduate
and graduate levels. There are currently 44 graduate students
pursuing their Masters and Doctoral degrees. From this
page, you can link to graduate student profiles and to
the undergraduate History Society, including their online
History Society Journal.
