My main research focus is on the social and cultural history of modern Thailand. My interest in the country and South East Asia stems from my experience of teaching English in Thailand and traveling through the region in the late 1990s. Upon returning to the UK, I obtained an MA in South East Asian Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London in 2001 before going on to complete a PhD in Thai history in 2007. I am currently revising my thesis, a socio-legal history of the criminalization of gambling in Thailand, for publication. My broader research interests include the development and propagation of Thai ‘popular’ history, and the history of crime and punishment in South East Asia. In my free time, I enjoy photography, travel and trying out all the various dishes and cuisines Singapore has to offer.
