Maitrii Aung-Thwin is Assistant Professor of Southeast Asian/Burmese History. He joined the Department of History at NUS in 2003 following a post-doctorate appointment with the Asia Research Institute (ARI) in 2002. He did his undergraduate degree at Northern Illinois University where he studied Classics, American, and Southeast Asian history. In 1994, he joined the PhD program in the Department of History at the University of Michigan where he received his PhD in 2001. His areas of interest and disciplinary leanings include ancient and modern Southeast Asian history, the history of Buddhist scholarship, socio-legal studies, the history of anthropology, and post-colonial studies. His book, Return of the Garuda King: Ethnology, Law and Rebellion in Colonial Burma, explores British colonialism's role in the historical construction of rebellion in Burma. He is currently co-authoring a history of Myanmar and editing a collection of essays which explore heritage and memory in Myanmar. Aung-Thwin teaches and supervises at both the undergraduate and graduate levels with a primary focus on Southeast Asian history and historiography. He is co-convener of ARI’s Burma-Thailand Study Group (which coordinates seminars for NUS/Visiting scholars) and he is currently Book Review Editor for the Journal of Southeast Asian Studies.
