I teach early Modern European history, imperial
history with a focus on Southeast Asia and on the
subject of early modern trade. My research interests
have focused on the life and work of the Dutch humanist
lawyer Hugo Grotius but I've also branched out into
Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese imperial history,
the history of the Ideal Republic and the history
of the modern law of nations.
