Very
much a product of this Department, I obtained my
first two degrees - BA (Hons), 1986, and MA, 1989,
- from NUS. I then went off to Cambridge University,
where I earned my doctorate in South Asian history
in 1992. My research and publications have focused
on the Sikh diaspora, civil-military relations,
social and political history of colonial Punjab,
and the partition of South Asia. Lately, I have
been shifting my focus to Southeast Asia, and have
been exploring issues of networks formation and
the place of maritime cities in the region. I have
been teaching in the Department since 1992, and
have offered modules on colonial and contemporary
South Asia, the Asia-Pacific, as well as the international
history of Singapore. I am married with two children
and outside of work, I spend most of my time on
food, sleep and sports, in that order. I am also
a great fan of kung-fu movies, and especially enjoy
television and movie versions of Louis Cha's swordfighting
novels.
