Born in a rural village in Zhejiang Province, China, I, in addition to schooling, collected pine needles for cooking, and wild grasses for pigs, planted rice, wheat, potatoes, and vegetables, and raised silkworms. Studying in the USA provided me with another great opportunity for many other jobs where I shelved books in the university library, worked as residential assistant for student apartments, led tours around Boston for international students in summer camps, served as babysitter and house-sitter in Lexington, and played games with kids (2-5) in a pre-school near Harvard Square.
Now I am researching and teaching history in NUS. My research focuses on Chinese ethnic and frontier history, but I am also interested in global history. And being the first college student in my family, I have begun writing my family history, however, it would be a life-long project.
I am dreaming to retire, reading Chinese imperial writings and playing Weiqi (Go) and Ping-Pong.
