Graduation Requirements

Check the graduation requirements for your cohort:

Cohort 2016 and after

Single Major [B.A. (Hons.)]

To major in Japanese Studies, students need to:

  • Passed JS1101E. This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE requirements.
  • Pass at least 84 MCs of JS modules or JS-recognised mdoules or LAJ modules which include the following:
    1. JS2101
    2. JS3101
    3. JS4101
    4. no more than 24 MCs of the following LAJ modules:
      1. LAJ1201
      2. LAJ2201
      3. LAJ2202
      4. LAJ2203
      5. LAJ3201 or LAJ3203
      6. LAJ3202 or LAJ3204 or LAJ3205
    5. a minimum of 60 MCs at level-3000 (including JS3101 and LAJ level-3000) or higher, with:
      1. a minimum of 40 MCs at level-4000 or higher (including JS4101)
      2. a maximum of 2 level-5000 JS modules (subject to department's approval)

Notes:

  • To declare an Honours track, students must have completed 110 MCs, including 44 MCs in the Major, with a CAP of 3.2 and above.
  • The Honours Thesis (15 MCs) is optional. To qualify for the Honours Thesis, students must complete 110 MCs including 44 MCs of JS major requirements with a minimum CAP of 3.5. In order to obtain Honours (Highest Distinction), students must achieve a CAP of 4.5 or higher AND read and pass the Honours Thesis.
  • Students who do not attempt the Honours Thesis will read level-4000 modules to fulfil the Honours Requirements.
  • Students who may also read a level-4000 Independent Studies Module (5 MCs). The level-4000 ISM carries a pre-requisite of 100 MCs completed, including 44 MCs in the Major, with a minimum CAP of 3.2. It precludes the Honours Thesis.
  • All level-4000 modules carry a general pre-requisite of having completed 80 MCs, including 28 MCs in the Major, with a minimum CAP of 3.2 OR being on the Honours Track (some level-4000 modules may have different pre-requisites).

Single Major (B.A.)

To major in Japanese Studies, students need to:

  • Passed JS1101E. This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE requirements.
  • Pass at least 44 MCs of JS modules or JS-recognised mdoules or LAJ modules which include the following:
    1. JS2101
    2. JS3101
    3. no more than 16 MCs of the following LAJ modules:
      1. LAJ1201
      2. LAJ2201
      3. LAJ2202
      4. LAJ2203
    4. a minimum of 20 MCs at level-3000 or higher(including JS3101)


Note: Students who were waived from LAJ module(s) should read JS module(s) to make up the minimum MCs required.

Cohort 2012 to 2015

Single Major [B.A. (Hons.)]

Pass at least 100 MCs of JS or JS-recognised or LAJ modules, which include the following:

  • JS1101E
  • JS2101
  • JS3101
  • JS4101
  • LAJ1201
  • LAJ2201
  • LAJ2202
  • LAJ2203
  • LAJ3201 or LAJ3203 or both
  • LAJ3202 or LAJ3204 or LAJ3205 or any 2 of the 3 modules
  • a minimum of 60 MCs at level-3000 or higher, with
    • a minimum of 40 MCs at level-4000 or higher (including JS4101)
    • a maximum of 2 level-5000 JS modules (subject to department's approval)

Notes:

  • LAJ1201, LAJ2201, LAJ2202, LAJ2203, LAJ3201, LAJ3202, LAJ3203, LAJ3204, LAJ3205, LAJ4203 and LAJ4205 offered by the Centre for Language Studies can count towards Japanese Studies graduation requirements.
  • Students who were waived from LAJ module(s) should read higher level LAJ or JS or JS-recognised module(s) to make up the minimum MCs required.

Second Major (for Cohort 2016 and after)

To major in Japanese Studies, students need to:

  • Passed JS1101E. This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE requirements.
  • Pass at least 44 MCs of JS modules or JS-recognised mdoules or LAJ modules which include the following:
    1. JS2101
    2. JS3101
    3. no more than 16 MCs of the following LAJ modules:
      1. LAJ1201
      2. LAJ2201
      3. LAJ2202
      4. LAJ2203
    4. a minimum of 20 MCs at level-3000 or higher(including JS3101)


Note: Students who were waived from LAJ module(s) should read JS module(s) to make up the minimum MCs required.

Second Major (for Cohort 2010 to 2015)

Pass at least 48 MCs of JS or JS-recognised or LAJ modules, which include the following:

  • JS1101E
  • JS2101
  • JS3101
  • LAJ1201
  • LAJ2201
  • LAJ2202
  • a minimum of 16 MCs at level-3000 or higher (including JS3101)


Notes
:

  • LAJ1201, LAJ2201, LAJ2202, LAJ2203, LAJ3201, LAJ3202, LAJ3203, LAJ3204, LAJ3205, LAJ4203 and LAJ4205 offered by the Centre for Language Studies can count towards Japanese Studies graduation requirements.
  • Students who were waived from LAJ module(s) should read higher level LAJ or JS or JS-recognised module(s) to make up the minimum MCs required.

Minor (for Cohort 2006 and after)

Pass at least 24 MCs of JS* or JS-recognised (for minor) or LAJ modules, which include the following:

  1. JS1101E
  2. a minimum of 4 MCs of Japanese language modules (LAJ), subjected to a maximum of 12 MCs
  3. a minimum of 4 MCs of JS modules at level-3000


Notes:

  • LAJ1201, LAJ2201, LAJ2202, LAJ2203, LAJ3201, LAJ3202, LAJ3203, LAJ3204, LAJ3205, LAJ4203 and LAJ4205 offered by the Centre for Language Studies can count towards Japanese Studies graduation requirements.
