A Graduates Seminar on
Nation-Building In The Malay World
28th & 29th October 2009
@ The Shaw Foundation Building AS7 Auditorium (Level 1),
5 Arts Link,
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
Abstract
The process of nation-building is inundated by constant negotiations and controversies as is exemplarily played out in the Malay world. This is to say that the nation is far from a completed enterprise. This seminar is interested to uncover the various facets of nation-building that confronts the Malay world. Our working definition of the Malay world refers to the Malay-Indonesian Archipelago consisting of Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, southern Thailand and the southern Philippines. Also, studies on the Malay world have by far been focusing exclusively on the ethnic Malays. This is to the exclusion of non-Malay ethnic minorities who are also significant players in the nation-building process. Addressing such a gap will yield fruitful discussions towards a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of nation-building.
