GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

The Department will be introducing the Malay Studies Honours programme beginning in AY2007-2008.

Shared Major (B.A.) Cohort 2001-2003

Accumulate at least 32 MCs of MS modules, which include the following:

  1. Read and pass the following module:
  2. MS1101E The Modernisation of the Malays
  3. Read and pass a minimum of 16 MCs of level-2000 modules and 12 MCs of level-3000 modules
  4. Shared Major (B.A.) 2004-2006

    Accumulate at least 32 MCs of MS modules, which include the following:

    1. Read and pass the following module:
    2. MS1101E The Modernisation of the Malays
    3. Read and pass a minimum of 16 MCs of level-2000 modules and 12 MCs of level-3000 modules

    Single Major (B.A.)

    Accumulate at least 56 MCs of MS modules, which include the following:

    1. Read and pass the following module:
    2. MS1101E The Modernisation of the Malays
    3. Read and pass a minimum of 36 MCs of Level-2000 modules and
    4. level-3000 modules, of which at least 20 MCs must be at level-3000
    5. Read and pass 16 MCs of other level-2000 and 3000 modules recognised as contributing towards the Malay Studies major requirements

    Single Major [B.A.(Hons)] (wef AY2007-2008)

    Accumulate at least 88 MCs of MS modules, which include the following:

    1. Read and pass the following modules:
      MS1101E The Modernisation of the Malays, and
      MS4101 Theory and Practice in Malay Studies
    2. Read and pass a minimum of 36 MCs of Level-2000 modules and
    3. level-3000 modules, of which at least 20 MCs must be at level-3000
    4. Read and pass a maximum of 16 MCs of other level-2000 and 3000 modules recognised as contributing towards the Malay Studies major requirements
    5. Read and pass a minimum of 20 MCs of level-4000 MS modules including MS4101
    6. Read and pass a maximum 12 MCs of other level-4000 modules recognised as contributing towards the Malay Major requirements.

    • (b) Students intending to pursue Honours are encouraged to read ONE of the following recognised methods modules to fulfil their MS major requirements:

      GE2225 Methods and Practices in Geography
      HY2241 Why History? The 20th Century 1914-1989
      PS2102 Political Inquiry: An Introduction
      SC2101 Methods of Social Research

      (c) To declare an Honours track, students must have completed 110 MCs, including 60 MCs in the Major, with a CAP of 3.5 and above

      (d) To qualify for the Honours Thesis/Project (15 MCs) students must be on the Honours Track. Students who do not attempt the Honours Thesis/Project will read level-4000 modules to fulfil the Honours Requirements.

      (e) Students may also read a level-4000 Independent Studies Module (5 MCs). The level-4000 Independent Studies Module carries a prerequisite of 100 MCs, including 60 MCs in the Major, with a minimum CAP of 3.5. It precludes the Honours Thesis/Project.

      (f) All level-4000 modules carry a general prerequisite of having completed 80MCs, including 28 MCs in the Major, with a minimum CAP of 3.5 or being on the Honours track (some level-4000 modules may have other prerequisites)

    Second Major Requirements (from 2006 cohort)

    Accumulate at least 48 MCs of MS modules, which include the following:

      1. Read and pass the following module:

            MS1101E The Modernisation of the Malays

      2.      Read and pass a minimum of 44 MCs of level-2000 and level-3000 MS or other recognised modules, of which at least 16 MCs must be at level-3000. Of these, a minimum of 32 MCs must be MS-coded.

    Minor (from 2006 cohort)
    Accumulate at least 24 MCs of MS modules, which include the following:

    1. Read and pass the following module:

    • MS1101E The Modernisation of the Malays

    2. Read and pass a minimum of 8 MCs of level 3000.
