'Intimacy' has received much attention in the social sciences, including geography, of late where it is taken to mean relationships that derive their significance and meanings from emotional and affective performances and conventions. Along with emotion and affect, discussions of intimacy have moved from the periphery to the centre of many research agendas in geography, anthropology and other social sciences.
This workshop aims to explore some concerns raised by a particular kind of intimacy; that involving sexual relationships. Following Lin (2008: 34), sexual intimacy is understood broadly as 'experiences of closeness of a sexual and sensual nature'. The papers presented at this workshop will focus on one particular group where the expression of sexual intimacy provides particular (and fairly unique) geographies--marginal migrants. The workshop will also explore the intersection between intimacy and marginal migrations through an exploration of themes based on in-depth research at various sites in Asia.
