FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. With a degree or honours in European Studies what are the career opportunities lined up for graduates?

Career prospects for NUS graduates in EU are bright as there are currently more than a thousand European companies operating in Singapore. Besides, various public sector bodies (such as Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry for Information and the Arts, Trade Development board and Singapore Tourism Board) as well as companies in the private sector all provide good career opportunities for our graduates. The graduate’s knowledge of Europe and their proficiency in either French or German are assets much appreciated by these institutions and companies.

Many of the Programme’s graduates have also proceeded to Europe to pursue postgraduate qualifications, and their knowledge of French and German has allowed them to gain entry into non-traditional universities outside of the United Kingdom.

2. Can I do European Studies at a Masters level at NUS? Another option is to do it overseas, do you know of any such similar courses in France itself?

European Studies is not being offered at Masters Level at NUS. You will need to check with respective universities in France, if they offer such courses. You could also enquire with the French Embassy in Singapore.

3. I would like to major in European Studies but I’m not sure whether I’m eligible for it with my A’ level results.

As an NUS student, you may read any subject you wish. However, to major in European Studies, you should have an aptitude for languages, as you will need to read and pass certain French or German language modules. You will also need to read and pass the module EU1101E before you can declare European Studies as your major. (See next Question)

4. It is mentioned that good A’ Level results are required to enter into the EU programme, I would like to know exactly what is the range of grades that are accepted/expected?

It is difficult to specify at this point as it would depend on the quality of the applications of other students as well. With the new system, students are required to read the exposure module for European Studies. Generally, you should obtain at least a C grade in the exposure module in order to major in EU.

5. Do we need to pass all our major modules in one year?

You may complete your required modules during the period of your candidature.

6. I am a first year student. I would like to know if I can use the EU1101E module to satisfy the Social Sciences requirement if I were to major in History, the reason being EU1101E is cross-listed as a HY module as well.

Yes, you may. Please note that you are not allowed to read the cross-listed HY module.

7. If I intend to take European Studies in my first year but I do not wish to major in it, is it compulsory for me to take either module LA1201FR or LA1201GR?

  No, it is not compulsory.

8. I have not decided on my major concentration, but can I proceed on in taking essential EU, language modules?

Yes, you may. If you do not decide to major in EU, the language modules will be counted towards your Unrestricted Elective outside Major or breadth requirements.

9. If I have been allocated the European Studies module as my exposure, is it by default I would be in the French/German class or am I able to choose the language of my interest?

No, you have to bid for the language module of your choice through the Centralized Online Registration System (CORS).

10. I noticed that the language modules have come under the Centre for Language Studies, will this affect my major in EU?

Although the language module codes have been renamed, the requirements for students concentrating in EU remain the same.

11. I am a EU major student (track A), which LA modules do I register for in the first and second semester respectively?

LA1201FR and LA2201FR, if you decide to read French or LA1201GR and LA2201GR if you decide to read German.

12. I am currently taking French as my EU modules and would like to take extra EU modules for my own interest. Will the grades for these modules be factored into my CAP and affect my position to be considered for EU honours? Can I take German as extra EU modules in an effort to pull up my EU CAP?

Yes, the grade for the extra EU modules will be factored into your CAP. As eligibility for honours is based on CAP, your status would definitely be affected. No, you cannot take extra EU modules to pull up your EU CAP.

13. I have signed up for EU1101E and upon looking at the timetable, I noticed that it is the same as HY1201. If I am allocated this exposure module, and I plan to major in History in my second year, must I make up for the EU1101E exposure module?

You may take EU1101E as your exposure module even though it is cross-listed with HY1201 as this module is not an exposure module for history major.

14. I would like to know if I’m eligible to take Advanced French (LA4101FR) even though I am not in the EU Honours programme.

Yes, you may if you fulfil the pre-requisite or preclusions. Please forward your enquiries on language studies to the Centre for Language Studies. Their office is located at AS4/02-05.

15. Do I need to register for language modules if I have already been allocated EU1101E?

If you wish to major in EU, you will need to register for the language of your choice. If you are successful, you will be assigned to a particular class.

16. I am a returning EU student and have some queries on my language module which I would like to clarify with someone. Do I approach the staff at Office of Programmes or the Centre for Language Studies?

17. I am a new student of graduate studies in English Literature. I’m very interested in the French Language module for beginners. How can I apply to attend that course for my interest?

Yes, you may take French to fulfill your Unrestricted Electives outside Major requirement. You have to bid for your classes through the Centralized Online Registration System (CORS) during the module registration period. This registration can be done using the computer labs in campus or accessing it from home using your own Internet Service Provider.

19. I would like to know if one is able to pursue their Honours in European Studies if one is taking European Studies as a Shared Major A, or B.
Only students who do single major can proceed to Honours. For students who are doing shared major, they graduate with a BA degree unless they convert to single major first and fulfill the single major requirements.

20. I read on the net that only EU single concentration students can proceed onto EU Honours. Is this true?

The clause "EU single concentration students can proceed onto EU Honours" is applicable only to students from 2001 cohort and after.

21. I am a third year Science student who would like to take Elementary German 2 as a CFM. I had to register late since my chosen CFM module (a different module) was cancelled and I realised that the balloting was over. Can I still be included in the class?

You can try to appeal for the module through the Dean's Office of your home faculty.

22. I am currently a 1st year Science faculty student and I would like to seek some information on the study of the German Language. Basically, am I eligible to read the German language module as an addition to my faculty requirements?

German Language modules are under the Centre for Language Studies. The office is located at AS4/02-05. Please check with your faculty/department if the modules read in our faculty can be used to fulfil your faculty requirements.

23. I am a Year 2 student majoring in English Literature and European Studies, taking German for the first time. I was wondering if I want to apply for SEP during this coming application, is it a must for me to choose to study in Germany? I am rather interested in applying for a semester in the US and am wondering if I can take my German module in US or anywhere else that offers it since I will definitely miss one module of German should my application be successful.

No. You do not necessarily have to go on SEP with a German University. As for the mapping of German modules, you will have to discuss it with the Convenor for German Language from the Centre for Language Studies.
