Topic:
Understanding China: Past & Present
Duration: 3 weeks (06 - 26 December 2009)
This winter programme, jointly offered by NUS and the Wuhan University, is structured on an intensive basis that aims to provide a general understanding of China by focusing on topical aspects of both historical and contemporary China. Topics that will be discussed include Chinese historical traditions, Chinese world order, Chinese economy, environmental issues and legal system in contemporary China. The 3-week programme is divided into 4 parts and co-taught by lecturers from both NUS and Wuhan University:
Part 1 - Environmental Management and Change (by Prof Victor Savage, NUS)
Part 2 - Law and Order (by Prof Kong Lingjie & Prof Nie Jianqian , WHU)
Part 3 - Family and Society (by Prof Lee Cheuk Yin, NUS)
Part 4 - Economy and Enterprise (by Prof Liu Xueyuan, WHU)
Course Syllabus:

Modes of Teaching and Learning
NUS students will attend lectures and seminars at the Wuhan University. Besides visits to local historical sties, study trips outside Wuhan will also be organised, including fieldtrip to Three Gorges to examine the environmental issues relating to the Three Gorges project; and excursion to Xi'an to visit the Terra-cotta Warrior Museum and historical sites to study the cultural traditions of the Qin-Han and Tang dynasties.

Assessment
Students will be graded for the module. This module is 100% CA.

Modular Credits
The Winter Programme carries 4 modular credits and is recognised by both the Department of Chinese Studies and the Minor in China Studies programme. It will be mapped to a module offered by the Department of Chinese Studies - CH3292 Selected Topics in Chinese Civilisation. The application for credit transfer is subjected to the successful completion of the courses.

Expected expenditure
S$700 after subsides from NUS and IE Singapore (includes return airfare, accommodation, course fee, field trips and selected meals during fieldtrips).

Accomodation
Students will be arranged to live on campus (WHU). Each room is equipped with two single beds, mattresses, desk, chairs, desk lamp, refrigerator, TV, telephone, internet access and attached bathroom.

Insurance
All participants are required to purchase a travel insurance which cover medical and accident for the whole duration of stay in China. An insurance policy must be provided upon registration at WHU.

Visa application
You have to apply for a 1 month tourist visa from the China Embassy.
