This course serves as an introductory module to the study of gender. We will examine the salience of gender as a subject of sociological inquiry and analysis as well as an extant phenomenon that governs all aspects of the social, the cultural and the personal. The course will introduce students to basic concepts such as gender, sex, sexuality, socialization, gender differences. The course will then go on to examine how both normative and non-normative conceptualizations of gender interact with, shape and are shaped by larger social institutions including class divisions, ethnicity, advertising and the state. |

Must have read and passed at least 4 modules from the Gender Studies Minor Programme, including SC2220. Students should have accquired the basic skill and the relevant knowledge pertaining to the specific modules that they have read to take on research in a specific field of inquiry.

In this module, students will learn to do multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research through group projects on gender issues. Students will put into practice concepts, theories and methodologies they have acquired in other Gender Studies module. Every semester, a theme will be selected and announced at the beginning of the semester. Students will do research on problems under that theme and present their findings at a student symposium at the end of the semester. Gender Discrimination, Representations of Masculinity and Femininity, Gender Identity, Violence Against Women, Sexual Harassment at Work, Gender Stereotypes at Work and at Home, Women in Politics, Impact of Gender on Different Disciplines are some possible themes. |
