FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS


1. Can American Studies be taken as an exposure module for either the Humanities or Social Sciences divisions?

  The American Studies Programme does not offer an exposure module. The Programme offers elective modules at Level 2000 and 3000. For more information on the modules, please visit here.


2. I'm an incoming year 1 student this semester. Is the American Studies dept offering AS1101E this coming semester? According to the FASS handbook, AS1101E will be offered, but I can't find the module code and lecture/exam timetables on your website and on the FASS homepage.

  Unfortunately AS1101E will not be offered in the academic year 2001/2002. An updated version of the FASS Handbook is available at http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/undergrad/info/handbook.htm.


3. Do you offer postgraduate studies for American Studies?

  We do not offer postgraduate studies.


4. Do we pass you our student cards?

  No. Students are to pass their student cards to the respective host departments such as History or English Language and Literature Department.


5. I need to know if I have been allocated a tutorial class for AS 2221?

  For tutorial registration please contact the relevant host/teaching department. For AS2221/EN2251, please contact the English Language and Literature Department. They are located at AS5, level 6.


6. I would like to drop AS2237, do I have to do it at the Office of Programmes or the History Department?

  Please go to the host (teaching) department for module add/drop.


7. I am a foreigner and I am interested in American Studies in NUS. I would like to know how I should apply for the course. Is there an age limit as I am 40 years old.

  American Studies modules are only offered as elective modules. To do an undergraduate degree there are other requirements to be fulfilled. 8. I am interested in taking American Studies as my major. How can I do so?

  American Studies is not offered as a major.


9. What are the benefits of reading American Studies?

  The American Studies programme is designed to facilitate the development of student's analytical abilities while at the same time introducing them to important concepts and institutions of American society. Students taking the course will find them a useful preparation for careers in which they will have dealings with Americans. This could include working for large multinational corporations, government service, and journalism.


10. What is the modular credit obtainable for reading AS modules?

  You will be awarded 4 mcs for each AS module read and pass.
