REQUIREMENTS - COHORT 2003 TO 2006

SINGLE MAJOR HONOURS REQUIREMENT [B.A. (HONS)]

Students who wish to graduate with an honours degree in European Studies must fulfil the following requirements:

Pass a minimum of 88 MC (22 modules) of EU, EU recognised and French or German language modules, which include:

(1) EU1101E Making of Contemporary Europe,
(2) at least 20 MC EU or EU recognised modules (5 modules) at level-3000 (including French or German language modules),
(3) at least 28 MC EU or EU recognised modules (7 modules) at level-4000 (including French or German language modules), which may include the EU Honours Thesis* (equivalent to 8 MC or 2 modules), and
(4) at least 20 MC language modules † (5 modules) in either French or German, up to a maximum of 32 MC (8 modules), from:

French Language Modules:
LA1201FR/LAF1201
LA3201FR/LAF3201
LA4201FR/LAF4201
LA2201FR/LAF2201 LA3202FR/LAF3202 or LAF3203 LA4202FR/LAF4202
    LA4203FR/LAF4203
    LA4204FR/LAF4204

German Language Modules:
LA1201GR/LAG1201
LA3201GR/LAG3201
LA4201GR/LAG4201
LA2201GR/LAG2201 LA3202GR/LAG3202 or LAG3203 LA4202GR/LAG4202
    LA4203GR/LAG4203
    LA4204GR/LAG4204

* Students who read the EU Honours Thesis that is worth 8 MCs will have to read and pass at least five other level-4000 EU or EU recognised modules , of which at least one must be a language module † # in French or German. Students are also to follow all the honours thesis requirements of the department in charge.


# Students who received any exemptions for their language requirements will have to read a level- 4000 EU or EU-recognised non-language module(s) in place of the language module(s) for the honours requirement. Note that students may only use modules from one language to fulfil EU requirements i.e. either French or German only.

† Students who have prior knowledge of French or German will be allowed to enroll for higher level language modules. Placement tests will determine the appropriate starting level for such students. Exemptions of 4 to 8 MCs (equivalent to 1 to 2 modules) can be awarded under the following circumstances:


(1) Required number of language modules if no exemptions granted: 5 modules (20MC)

(2) Exemption of 4 MCs - Students who qualify for LA4202FR/LAF4202 Advanced French II or LA4202GR/LAG4202 Advanced German II will be granted an exemption of 4 MCs. They will be required to read only 3 language modules.

(3) Exemption of 8 MCs - Students who qualify for LA4203FR/LAF4203 French Studies I or LA4203GR/LAG4203 German Studies I will be granted an exemption of 8 MCs. They will be required to read only 2 language modules:

LA4204FR/LAF4204 French Studies II LA4204GR/LAG4204 German Studies II
