Adam Smith: Economics as Moral Philosophy
  • Friday, 02 March 2012 (4.30pm)
  • Block AS7, Shaw Foundation Building Auditorium (AS7, #01-02)
  • Synopsis: Despite his reputation as the founder of political economy, Adam Smith (1723-90) was a philosopher who constructed a general system of morals in which political economy was but one part. This wider context for the economic ideas has become more commonly acknowledged in recent times, but there is little agreement on what kind of moral philosophy it was that Smith maintained. Although he is invoked as an authority for ideological prescriptions of several sorts, it seems hard to tell exactly how he justified any ‘policy advice’ – in fact, whether there is any such advice in his work. The lecture addresses this issue by giving a portrait of the remarkable coherence of Smith’s thought as a whole and thereby characterizing the type of moral theory that led him to political economy.
