Because we offer breadth, depth and choice.

The FASS offers an average of 400 modules per year.  You will have the chance to sample a wide range of courses outside your chosen area of specialization.  You will also gain depth in your chosen area of specialization – from nineteen available subjects under three divisions in the FASS.  Students will be able to devise problems and pose questions of their own in these areas.

We believe that undergraduates are mature learners who should be given the responsibility to determine the precise balance of depth and breadth, their area of specialization, and the scope and nature of their study outside that area of specialization. Our students have flexibility and choice.

Because we offer exciting learning possibilities.

Joint degree programmes with leading Australian and American universities, double degree programmes, double majors and multidisciplinary minor programmes are available.

Because we offer excellent learning experiences.

More than 300 faculty members conduct extensive research into many areas like trade and business networks, industrial organization and relations, globalization, social change and urban transformation, nation-building and politics in Asia, population, ageing, health, family life, and many more areas.  They also teach in the classroom, sharing their research insights and discoveries, and engaging students in this exciting synergy between research and teaching.

Outside the classroom, the student exchange programme, immersion programmes, field studies, internships and summer programmes (for example with Yale University) allow for unique learning experiences that bring classroom learning into real-life situations to be tried and tested out.  Findings feed back into the classroom in a cycle which sees students become researchers, teachers and self-learners.

Because we offer vital skill development for careers.

The FASS experience will equip you with skills that will stand you in good stead not just for one career path but for several.  You will gain skill in critical thinking, analysis, evaluation, problem solving, written and oral communication.  In a world where the only constant is change, these skills are valued by employers because it means you can adapt quickly to changes, applying original thinking and knowledge to new situations and expressing your ideas succinctly.

FASS graduates are thus well positioned for a large variety of jobs in the public and private sector – teaching, publishing, advertising, marketing, corporate communications, event management, broadcasting, banking and finance, information technology, tourism planning and many more.  You should not be surprised to find many successful entrepreneurs among our graduates too!
