Abstract:

  • The vast possibilities and dangers of biotechnology in its various facets, dimensions and applications have been received with divergent reactions all over the world. Outcries of rejection have been countered by calls for the possibilities of its usage for the benefit of mankind. The reception in the Islamic world is no exception to this. However, it deserves specific attention with regard to the reception of scholars of Islamic law (fiqh), the educated public and policy makers. An analysis needs to take into account the paradigms of Islam and science as a reference point, the position of fiqh and the scholars of fiqh in contemporary societies and the particularity of the discourse in the Islamic world as being made up of developing countries.
