Lee Kong Chian Graduate Scholarship

The Lee Kong Chian Graduate Scholarships ("Scholarships") were established from donations received from the Lee Foundation and are the University's most prestigious scholarship awards for graduate students. Up to 5 new Scholarships will be given each year. Not all Scholarships will be awarded unless there are candidates of sufficient merit.

The bond-free Scholarships are open to students of all nationalities who gain admission to any PhD programme at the University. In keeping with the donor's wishes, the Scholarships will be awarded to well-rounded individuals showing exceptional promise who have an appropriate balance of intellect and character. Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and a commitment to service. Applicants interested in applying for the Scholarship must submit a personal essay and a record of co-curricular activities or community

Shortlisted candidates will be notified for a scholarship interview either in Singapore or their home country. Award of the Scholarship is based on competition among eligible candidates and performance at the Scholarship interview. The award is tenable for one year in the first instance; but subject to the scholar's satisfactory progress, it may be renewed each semester. The maximum award period is four years.

Each award covers:

  • A monthly stipend of S$3,500*;
  • Tuition and Miscellaneous Student Fees at the University;
  • An annual book allowance of S$500;
  • A one-off air travel allowance of S$3,000 (for international students admitted from Semester 2, AY2015/2016); and
  • A one-off laptop allowance of S$1,500.

* Monthly stipend of this amount takes effect from 1 August 2015. In addition, Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions shall be provided to Singapore Citizens at a rate pegged to the prevailing employer's contribution rate set by CPF, on top of the monthly stipend received.

Scholarship recipients must be in Singapore during the duration of the scholarship award, except during period(s) of approved leave. Recipients may be required by the Head of Department/Programme concerned to assist in teaching or departmental work.

The University does not provide additional assistance towards travel or other costs, besides those indicated above, nor does it guarantee employment to the scholar on the successful completion of the programme.
