The Research Scholarship is initially awarded for one year. It may be renewed each semester on the basis of the scholar's performance in the previous semesters and the recommendation of the Faculty. The end-date of award is the end of the fourth year of candidature for PhD candidates.

The Research Scholarship will carry a monthly stipend plus tuition fee subsidy:

Research scholars who pass their PhD Qualifying Examination, within the stipulated period during their candidature, are eligible for an additional top-up of S$500 per month for a specific period.

Research scholars must be in Singapore during the duration of the scholarship award, except during period(s) of approved leave. Recipients may be required by the Head of Department/Programme concerned to assist in teaching or departmental work.

The University does not provide additional assistance towards travel or other costs nor does it guarantee employment to the scholar on the successful completion of the programme.

In some cases, candidates who do not qualify for the Research Scholarship may be considered for a Tuition Fee Allowance instead. This will mostly apply to Masters candidates.  There may also be part-time work opportunities available for application. Successful candidates will be informed of such openings.
