The University offers Research Scholarships to outstanding PhD candidates to pursue a full-time graduate research degree at NUS. A limited number of scholarships is available each academic year. They are therefore awarded on a very competitive basis.
Applicants must be university graduates with at least Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degree or equivalent and at the time of the award of the Research Scholarship and must have been offered admission as a PhD candidate for graduate research programme at this University. There is no restriction on the nationality of applicants.
The Research Scholarship is initially awarded for one year. It may be renewed each semester on the basis of the scholar's performance in the previous semesters and the recommendation of the Faculty. The end-date of award is the end of the fourth year of candidature for PhD candidates.
The Research Scholarship will carry a monthly stipend plus tuition fee subsidy:
(i) The monthly stipend for PhD candidates are as follow:

* With effect from 1 August 2015, Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions shall be provided at a rate pegged to the prevailing employer's contribution rate set by CPF, on top of the monthly stipend received.
(ii) The scholarship will provide the full tuition fee subsidy.
Research scholars who pass their PhD Qualifying Examination, within the stipulated period during their candidature, are eligible for an additional top-up of S$500 per month for a specific period.
Research scholars must be in Singapore during the duration of the scholarship award, except during period(s) of approved leave. Recipients may be required by the Head of Department/Programme concerned to assist in teaching or departmental work.
The University does not provide additional assistance towards travel or other costs nor does it guarantee employment to the scholar on the successful completion of the programme.
In some cases, candidates who do not qualify for the Research Scholarship may be considered for a Tuition Fee Allowance instead. This will mostly apply to Masters candidates. There may also be part-time work opportunities available for application. Successful candidates will be informed of such openings.
