A/P O’Halloran’s major research area is the systemic functional (SF) approach to multimodal discourse analysis (MDA) and her work has resulted in various research publications. She set up the Laboratory for Research in Semiotics (LRS) through an NUS grant, and she uses the facilities in the lab to help her undergraduate and postgraduate students learn about social semiotics.
She teaches two postgraduate modules, 'Linguistic Theories and Frameworks' (EL5881/6881) which is concerned with the theory and practice of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), and 'Explorations in Applied Linguistics' (EL5270/6270) which is a postgraduate course in multimodality. On the undergraduate level, she teaches the Honours module 'Topics in English Language: Systemic Functional Grammar' (EL4880). In addition, she supervises many postgraduate students in the field of SFL and multimodality.
