She was awarded a Research Scholarship towards her PhD degree from the National University of Singapore. Although most of her research is conducted in Singapore, she has extensive knowledge of the Asia Pacific region. Her publications include six books, for example, Untapped Resources: Women in Ageing Societies across Asia, Social Work in Context: A Reader, Gerontological Counselling: An Introductory Handbook, Understanding and Counselling Older Persons: A Handbook and more than 40 articles on the subject of gerontology in well-reputed international and regional journals. Her research interests include social policies and their impact on older people, long term care policies and services, gender issues, retirement, and intergenerational bonds. Her current research activity focuses on family caregivers, grandparenting in Asia, senior Indians in the Indian Diaspora, methodologies in researching older populations, and sensory intervention with dementia patients.
Prof. Mehta is currently a Nominated Member of Parliament. She is on the Editorial Board of Hong Kong Journal of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Associate Editor of Asia Pacific Journal of Social Work and Development and Consultant Editor of Social Development Issues.
Her specialisation is social gerontology, although she also teaches modules such as social work skills in working with older persons, group work modalities, introduction to social work and social work in cross-cultural contexts.
