She has a keen interest in research involving elder issues and family caregiving as well as the impact of social policies on the elderly and their caregivers in Japan.
She has published two books, The Decision Making of Law for the Welfare of the Aged in Japan(1993) and Transition of the Welfare for the Elderly in Japan (2004). She was also the editor of Security of Life for the Elderly in Japan (2005). She contributed articles in The Meiji Gakuin Sociology and Social Welfare Review, and in books such as Health Care and Social Care Management, Family at Present and Family Policy and Aging and Family. At present, Professor Okamoto is a standing member of the Board of Directors of Japanese Society of Behavioral Sciences for the Elderly. She is also the Chairman of the Editing Committee for the Journal of Japanese Society of Behavioral Sciences for the Elderly.
