Profile
|
Faizal Bin Yahya is an Assistant Professor in the South Asian Studies Programme, National University of Singapore. He attained his PhD in Economics from the University of Sydney, Australia and was an Australian Overseas Post graduate Research Scholar from 1994–1998. Prior to his appointment at the National University of Singapore, he was working for the Singapore Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was a member of the Singapore Delegation to the United Nations General Assembly in 1998 and was also involved in multilateral meetings dealing with environmental issues such as climate change and transboundary hazardous wastes. His thesis was on Singapore and India economic linkages, using the Bangalore Information Technology Park (ITPB) as a case study. His research interests include economic ties between South and East Asia / Southeast Asia, especially India and Singapore, current and future trends in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and infrastructure development such as telecommunications, ports, roads and airports. Other research areas include ASEAN’s growing interests in South Asia and in particular business opportunities in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
With increasing economic integration between India and Southeast Asia, human capital in terms of skilled Indian workers and professionals undertaking employment, visiting or studying in Southeast Asia has become a growing trend. Indian professionals have not only made a name for themselves in the field of information technology (IT) but have emerged as a leading source of talent for the banking and finance industry, sciences and engineering. In this context, Dr. Faizal is currently working on a Faculty funded research project on “the economic and social impact of migrating Indian professionals on Southeast Asia”. With the emergence of knowledge based economies (KBEs) and the declining fertility levels around the world, Indian human capital will become a very valuable commodity and much sought after around the globe. This is especially relevant to India and Singapore relations with the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) in June 2005. For the next two years, 2006-2008, Dr. Faizal will be taking field trips to regions in South and Southeast Asia to collect primary data with regards to migrating Indian professionals.
