What modules do you need to read to graduate with a degree in South Asian Studies? Find the answers below. We welcome any questions you may have. Please contact us for a consultation.

Cohort 2016 onwards

To graduate with Honours in South Asian Studies (SN), students need to:

  1. Pass SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Dev (This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE requirements).

  2. Pass 84 MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules which include:
    (a)10MCs of SN essential modules:

    1. SN4101 Approaches to the Study of South Asia &

    2. SN4102 Critical Debates in South Asian Studies


    (b) at least 20MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules at level-3000 or higher
    (c) at least 24 MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules at level-2000 of higher
    (d) at least 30 MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules at Level-4000 or higher.

  3. Pass a maximum of 12 MCs of Tamil or Hindi track language* modules.


Cohorts 2015 to 2013

Pass at least 100 MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules (include Tamil or Hindi language modules), which include the following:

  1. SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Dev

  2. SN4101 Approaches to the Study of South Asia

  3. SN4102 Critical Debates in South Asian Studies

  4. a minimum of 44 MCs of SN modules (including SN1101E)

  5. a maximum of ONE of the following "methods" modules*:

    (i) GE2225
    (ii) HY2241
    (iii) PS2102 or PS3257

    *Students are encouraged to read ONE of the recognised "methods" modules.

  6. a minimum of 60 MCs at level-3000 or higher (excluding language modules) with a minimum of 40 MCs at level 4000 or higher, including SN4101 Approaches to the Study of South Asia and SN4102 Critical Debates in South Asian Studies

  7. a maximum of 2 level-5000 SN modules (subject to department's approval).

  8. a maximum of 8 MCs of either Tamil or Hindi track language* modules, not both.

    * Language modules are optional.
    These modules offered by the Centre for Language Studies are for students with no background in Tamil or Hindi.

Cohort 2016 onwards

To graduate with a B.A. degree in single major in South Asian Studies, students need to:

  1. Pass SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Dev (This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE requirements).

  2. Pass 44 MCs of SN and SN-recognised modules which include:
    (a) at least 20MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules at level-3000 or higher.
    (b) at least 24 MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules at level-2000 or higher (including Tamil or Hindi language modules)
  3. Pass a maximum of 12 MCs of Tamil or Hindi track language* modules.

Cohorts 2015 to 2013

Pass at least 60 MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules (include Tamil or Hindi language modules), which include the following:

  1. SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Dev

  2. a minimum of 40 MCs of level-2000 and level-3000 SN modules

  3. a minimum of 20 MCs at level-3000 or higher (excluding language modules)

  4. a maximum of 8 MCs of either Tamil or Hindi track language* modules, not both
* Language modules are optional. These modules offered by the Centre for Language Studies are for students with no background in Tamil or Hindi.


Cohort 2016 onwards

To graduate with second major in South Asian Studies, students need to:

  1. Pass SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Dev (This will be counted towards the Faculty Core or UE requirements).

  2. Pass 44 MCs of SN and SN-recognised modules which include:
    (a) at least 20MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules at level-3000 or higher.
    (b) at least 24 MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules at level-2000 or higher (including Tamil or Hindi language modules)
  3. Pass a maximum of 12 MCs of Tamil or Hindi track language* modules.


Cohorts 2015 to 2013

Pass at least 48 MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules (include Tamil or Hindi language modules), which include the following:

  1. SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Dev

  2. a minimum of 16 MCs at level-3000 (excluding language modules)

  3. a maximum of 8 MCs of either Tamil or Hindi track language* modules, not both.
* Language modules are optional. These modules offered by the Centre for Language Studies are for students with no background in Tamil or Hindi.


All cohorts

Pass at least 24 MCs of SN or SN-recognised modules from List A, which include the following:

  1. SN1101E South Asia: People, Culture, Dev

  2. a minimum of 8 MCs at level-3000

  3. a maximum of 8 MCs of either Tamil or Hindi track language* modules, not both.
